Privacy Policy
Last Updated: October 10, 2025
Welcome to Thoughtogram. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our website and services (collectively, the "Service"). Please read this policy carefully. If you do not agree with the terms of this privacy policy, please do not access the site.
1. Information We Collect
We may collect information about you in a variety of ways. The information we may collect on the Service includes:
Personal Data You Provide to Us
- Account Information: When you register for an account, we collect your email address and a hashed version of your password.
- User Content: We collect and store all the content you create on your boards, including text, links, and the structure of your cards and connections ("User Content").
Payment Information
When you subscribe to our Service, you will provide your payment information directly to our third-party payment processor, Stripe. We do not collect, store, or have access to your full payment card details. We only receive a token from Stripe to confirm your subscription status. You can review Stripe's privacy policy here.
Data We Collect Automatically
- Log and Usage Data: We may automatically collect standard log information, including your IP address, browser type, operating system, access times, and the pages you have viewed directly before and after accessing the Service.
- Cookies: We use cookies to manage your session and provide our "remember me" functionality. A cookie is a small file placed on your device. You may refuse to accept cookies by activating the appropriate setting on your browser. However, if you select this setting, you may be unable to access certain parts of our Service.
1.1 Chrome Extension
Our Chrome Extension enhances your Thoughtogram experience by allowing you to save web content directly to your boards. This section explains how the extension handles your information.
What the Extension Accesses
- Current Page Information: The extension can access the URL and title of the webpage you're viewing, but only when you explicitly choose to save it by clicking the extension icon or using the right-click menu.
- Selected Text: When you highlight text and use the "Save Highlight to Thoughtogram" right-click option, the extension accesses only the text you've selected.
- Session Cookie: The extension reads your Thoughtogram session cookie (PHPSESSID) to verify that you're logged in. This allows the clipper to function properly.
When Data is Accessed
The extension does NOT monitor or track your browsing activity. It only accesses webpage content when you take one of these explicit actions:
- Click the extension icon and choose to save content
- Right-click and select "Save Page to Thoughtogram"
- Highlight text, right-click, and select "Save Highlight to Thoughtogram"
If you don't actively use the extension to clip content, it does not access any page data.
What Data is Stored Locally
The extension stores the following information locally in your browser (not on our servers):
- Board List Cache: Your list of boards is cached locally to populate the dropdown menu in the extension popup.
- New Tab Preference: Your choice of whether to redirect new tabs to your Thoughtogram Home board or use the mini bookmark board.
- Custom Bookmarks: If you add personal bookmarks to the new tab board, these are stored locally in your browser only.
Where Clipped Content Goes
When you use the extension to clip content (URLs, notes, highlighted text), that information is sent directly to your Thoughtogram account and stored securely on our encrypted servers, subject to the same privacy protections described throughout this policy. The extension acts as a bridge between your browser and your Thoughtogram account—it does not independently collect, analyze, or store your clipped content.
Browser Permissions Explained
The extension requires certain browser permissions to function:
- "Access your data for all websites": This permission is required for two reasons: (1) to enable right-click context menus on any webpage you visit, and (2) to open your custom board URLs (each board has a unique URL based on its title). This permission does not mean we access or monitor your browsing activity—we only access page data when you explicitly click to save it.
- Storage: To remember your preferences and cache your board list locally.
- Cookies: To check if you're logged in to Thoughtogram.
- Tabs: To get the current page's URL and title for auto-populating the clip form, and to open your board after saving content.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect in the following ways:
- To provide, operate, and maintain our Service.
- To manage your account, including processing your subscription payments and sending you related communications.
- To respond to your comments, questions, and provide customer service.
- To monitor and analyze usage and trends to improve your experience with our Service.
- To protect our Service and users from fraudulent or illegal activity.
3. Disclosure of Your Information
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We may share information we have collected about you in certain situations:
- With Service Providers: We share information with our payment processor, Stripe, as necessary to process your payments.
- By Law or to Protect Rights: If we believe the release of information about you is necessary to respond to legal process, to investigate or remedy potential violations of our policies, or to protect the rights, property, and safety of others, we may share your information as permitted or required by any applicable law, rule, or regulation.
- Business Transfers: If we reorganize or sell all or a portion of our assets, undergo a merger, or are acquired by another entity, your information may be transferred as a successor asset. We will notify you before your information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
4. Data Security
We use administrative, technical, and physical security measures to help protect your personal information. Your User Content is encrypted on our servers using industry-standard encryption. While we have taken reasonable steps to secure the personal information you provide to us, please be aware that despite our efforts, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable, and no method of data transmission can be guaranteed against any interception or other type of misuse.
5. Your Data Rights
You have certain rights regarding your personal information. Depending on your location, these may include the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Request that we correct any inaccurate personal information.
- Request that we delete your personal information. You can do this at any time through your account settings, which will result in the permanent deletion of all your User Content.
To exercise these rights, please contact us at the email address below or use the tools provided in your account settings.
6. Children's Privacy
Our Service is not intended for individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete such information.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
