James Barton

Hi, I am James Barton the founder of Thoughtogram. I love evaluating different productivity tools and decided to create my own based on my unique perspective.

I wanted a tool with the quality of simplicity but also maximum flexibility.

Design Evolution: Step 1: Decide on a Visual Board

When I was younger I used cards on the desk to help research topics such as the virtues. Arranging the cards in different ways helped me to get a better understanding of that and other topics and gain insights.

A visual board with cards gives a lot more freedom compared to both lists and long form text. The user can arrange things how they want with an extra dimension of freedom. It is great for getting an overview and distilling ideas plus finding patterns and connections.

.

Design Evolution: Step 2: Remove the Scroll and Zoom

I found that other whiteboard apps had annoying scroll and zoom controls. I decided to go for fixed visual boards with no scroll or zoom.

This means that your cards are always readable and in focus. There is no scroll fatigue, no getting lost in large sprawling boards, no scrolling out too far so cards cannot be seen and no zooming too close so that only 1 card can be seen and context is lost.

Design Evolution: Step 3: Remove fixed bars and menus

Thoughtogram now had a unique fixed board and it was great but I realized the optimum design would have no fixed side or top bars at all. I removed them and replaced them with a toolbar that only appears when needed by selecting a card or by long pressing the left mouse button. This means less dragging distance. It also means maximum space for the cards. It allows for a completely clean work space like a fresh piece of paper but with much more power.

Design Evolution: Step 4: The New Tab Chrome Extension

Finding my Thoughtogram Homeboard so useful I decided to make a chrome extension so that my Board could also be my New Tab page. The extension is also a web clipper so users can send web and send Book marks, quick notes and short text highlights from anywhere on the internet.

Design Evolution: Step 5: Make Things Even Better

I upgraded Thoughtogram in various ways allowing users to paste in youtube urls, picture urls and the videos and images can be displayed on cards, moved around and resized etc. Also many other refinements.

Design Evolution: Step 6: I added an Extras Section

I added an Extras Section all under the one simple $5 a month subscription. The extras include a retro games arcade, a weekly Achievements page, a Discovery page where 2 of your cards appear next to each other to spark insights. Also an extensive Mind Gym to help people give up smoking, boost confidence, increase focus and many other topics. More extras to come all under the same subscription

Design Evolution: Step 7: This is where you come in

I would really appreciate your feature suggestions and other improvement ideas. Please sign up for your free 30 day free trial. No credit card is required.
